SYLHET DISTRICT played an inter friendly at Stepney Green Astroturf on Monday, 21st August in preparation for the Sylhet District Cup which will take place on 10th September. The “battle of the MBEs” saw Mamun Choudhury’s Over-40s beat Emdad Rahman’s Over-50s 2-0.

Players on show for the Over-50s included Bodrul Hoque, Syed Salique Ahmed, Dawlath Khan – and Shawkat Ali, who travelled down from Birmingham. The Over-40s were spearheaded by captain Repon Chowdhury.

Commenting after the game, Mamun Choudhury MBE said, “It was a much tighter contest than the scoreline suggests. There was a lot of energy and enthusiasm throughout the game. Overall it was a really entertaining evening and that’s what football is about.”

Emdad Rahman MBE added, “The fact that these players can still race up and down the pitch at their age is an inspiration. With full pun intended, I felt my players were inspirational tonight. They attacked in numbers, defended deep and made some good chances. It was a great touch from the over 40s to applaud us at the end. Both sets of players are a tremendous advert for the game at this level.”
