The Councillor has launched a public petition calling for the Council to enforce speed limits and consider taking other measures to keep Westferry Road safe. His actions come after a horror crash on Westferry Road yesterday, 26th June. A woman believed to be in her 50s who was visiting her family on the Isle of Dogs was hit by a lorry as she tried to cross Westferry Road on a zebra crossing between the Barkantine estate and St John’s Park.

The victim was taken to hospital by their air ambulance, where she remains in a critical condition with severe injuries to her leg. Roads were closed while the emergency services gave her urgent treatment and dealt with the aftermath of the accident.

Cllr Miah has asked the Council to review safety in Westferry Road with a view to taking practical steps to improve matters. He has also launched a petition on a popular petition site so that constituents can get involved in campaigning for improvements.

Cllr Miah explained, “Real change happens when everyday people like you and I come together and stand up for what we believe in.  Together we can reach heaps of people and help create change around this important issue.” He is calling on residents of the Isle of Dogs to sign the petition, but also for all residents of Tower Hamlets to add their names.

Everyone needs safer roads, and even if you don’t live in Westferry Road yourself, you or your loved ones may visit it one day. Cllr Miah is also asking everyone who signs the petition to share it with their friends and family members and ask them to sign it too.
