East Londoners charged with terror offences

A NEWHAM man has been charged with encouraging terrorism, contrary to Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

Shafi Mohammed Saleem, 28, of Forest Gate, was originally arrested on 19th April. He was released on bail while police investigated the appearance of extremist material online. He was then charged on 12th July and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 26th July.

TWO MEN from East London were arrested in Essex on 30th June by officers from the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command.

Mohammed Kamal Hussain, 28, was charged with support for a proscribed organisation under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000; two counts of encouragement of terrorism under Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006; and acts in preparation of terrorism under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

Mohammed Ashfaqur Hemel, 31, was charged under Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006 with encouragement of terrorism.

The men are being held in custody and appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 14th July.

A third man who was arrested at the same time as the first two has been released without charge.

A MAN WAS stopped by police officers at London City airport under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000 on 13th July. He was then arrested on suspicion of preparation of act to commit terrorism, under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006. The man, aged 49, was arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command. He has now been released on bail and is due to report back to police in late July. Police officers also carried out a search on an address in Essex in connection with this arrest. The investigation continues.
