Hackney child death was manslaughter

WAS JUST AFTER 11pm on 18th March that police were called out to a flat in Wilberforce Road, Hackney, N4, after reports that two children had been injured. Police and the Ambulance Service attended.

An ambulance took the two children to an East London hospital. One of them, a one year old baby, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The cause of death was later established to be “blunt force trauma”. The second child made a recovery and has now left hospital.

Investigating police officers determined to interview Bidhya Sagar Das, 33, in connection with the incident – and appealed to the public for help in finding him. Das was quickly located in Hackney and was arrested on 19th March on suspicion of one count of murder and a second count of attempted murder. Two days later he was formally charged.

On 7th September, Das appeared at the Central Criminal Court, where he pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility of a one year old child and attempted murder of a second child. He is due to return to court for sentencing on 12th October.
