Khoyrul Shaheed honoured by Brent Mayor

THE RENOWNED community activist Khoyrul Shaheed was recently honoured by Councillor Parvez Ahmed, the Mayor of the London Mayor of Brent. Shaheed joined other community leaders at the well attended civic reception to celebrate his outstanding achievements in community service.

Ten years ago the charity aid worker was working in a restaurant – when he took a decision to embark on a journey of self development. Shaheed did not find things easy, but he was determined to achieve a lifelong ambition to serve communities and those less fortunate.

shaheed 2Today Shaheed, who is also renowned for his interfaith work and community partnership activities with local churches, leads the London office of the humanitarian aid group Human Relief Foundation – and his exploits and achievements are immense.

Shaheed has led fund raising campaigns to the three mountain peaks of Great Britain – Ben Nevis, Snowdon, Scafell Pike – and to the Great Wall of China; has co-ordinated several long distance charity runs; and has led international humanitarian missions to the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan.

Shaheed’s humanitarian efforts with refugees on the island of Kos led to international acclaim as he was filmed bringing in a family of stricken boat refugees to the mainland. Footage of Shaheed carrying a child to safety has featured in the mainstream, notably on Channel 4.

Brent Mayor Parvez Ahmed hosted the prestigious group. Shaheed’s childhood friend, business personality Mamun Alom, paid tribute to him: “Khoyrul Shaheed and I have been friends since we were children. He is simply an inspiration with everything that he does and I am very proud to see him receive this award today.”

Shaheed added: “To say I am happy is an understatement. It’s always nice to be recognised and I am very grateful and honoured. I am dedicating this award to my family for their unquestionable support. I also thank my friends, well wishers, the team at Human Relief Foundation and the Mayor for their support.”
