Olympic flame sets Borough alight

Mayor Lutfur Rahman will welcome the Olympic flame.

Saturday, 21st July is the day the Borough celebrates the arrival of the Olympic flame. It is due to arrive in the Borough at 1.50pm and will travel along Bow Road and Mile End Road, before turning into White Horse Lane at 2.15pm.  It will then go down Stepney Green and Redman’s Road before arriving in Stepney Green Park, Stepney Way, E1 at 2.20pm – where it will stop for its lunch break!

A free community event in Stepney Green Park will be held from 12 noon till 5pm, with the arrival of the torch its main feature.  There will be music and dance on the main stage, which will see the winners of CBBC Sport Relief Does Glee Club 2012, Faye Guy, Redcoat Girls Project Dance Group, Soytten Sen School of Performing Arts, Fabulous Lounge Swingers and Bowjangles perform next to the Olympic flame. A sports area will also give visitors the chance to try out sports such as relay races, volleyball, mini tennis and trampolining. Children will be well catered for, with a bouncy castle, climbing wall, make and take workshops and face painting all available.

At 3.25 activities will pause to see the Olympic flame on its way, and Mayor Lutfur Rahman will speak to the crowd.  The flame will travel down Redman’s Road, Jamaica Street, Stepney Way, Sidney Street and Raven Row, before hitting Whitechapel Road at approximately 3.30pm. The final leg of its journey will see the flame go through Osborn Street, Wentworth Street and Commercial Street, before it leaves Tower Hamlets just before 4pm.
