With a glorious summer day in full swing, The Lighted Path, a new Tower Hamlets-based mental health project, was launched during a small community fun day at Sir John MacDougal Gardens on the Isle of Dogs.

The family event offered stalls, face painting for children, balloons, food, toys and sweets alongside information on mental health and the support which is available for people affected by mental health problems. There was a stall by Al-Farooq Fragrances and Caked Inn by Khadeja and Taslima who donated all proceeds from their delicious cake bakes to the designated charity of the day.

A number of volunteers were on hand to distribute literature and also speak to people about the services The Lighted Path will offer. All funds raised have been donated to the Muslim Hands Charity to feed the needy during the coming month of Ramadan.

Project Manager Hajira Mahbub said: “It’s been a really positive and fruitful day. Various members of our community have visited us and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Our dedicated volunteers will be extending their knowledge to support members in our community. We also hope to offer our assistance to local mental health organisations. Pooled resources and expertise are very much the way forward.”

Ghalib Amin joined the event with his mother and sister. The primary school pupil said, “I have hurt my arm and have been indoors during my school holiday. My mum bought me here today with my sister. It’s nice when we can help people if there is anything making them upset or sad.”
