Police chief’s wife assassinated: protests mount

Mystery surrounds the murder of Mahmuda Aktar, wife of Superintendent Babul Aktar, in Chittagong today.

Immediate responses to the murder centred on speculation that Ms Aktar was killed because of her husband’s leading role in police investigations into the Jamayetul Mujahideen group – and police said they would investigate this theory.

The theory was strengthened by the brutal circumstances of the killing: Ms Aktar was set upon by three men as she left her home to take her son to the school bus. The men stabbed her and shot her in the head – in front of her six year old little boy. Ms Aktar died immediately.

The three killers are variously reported as having arrived on bicycles and/or motorcycles. However, in a new development some hours after the killing, police announced that they have CCTV footage of the killers going to and from the scene. No footage of the killing has yet emerged, but the video of the killers should help to identifying them.

Home Secretary Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was quick to confirm that the theory that supporters of Jamayetul Mujahideen were responsible for the killing would be prominent in the investigation of the crime. He added that he would consider whether the families of leading police officers should be provided with security. However, opposition forces said it was possible that Government supporters had carried out the atrocity – with a view to stirring trouble in the country.

Protestors were quickly out on the scene, calling for the killers to be found so that justice could be done.
