Selina gets ahead with Reading Ahead

Selina Jahan came to the UK some seven years ago, from the Bagbari district of Sylhet, Bangladesh. She came with her husband, Shahin Ahmed, and their children. Initially the family joined her father in Tower Hamlets, but they then decided to move to the south Yorkshire city of Sheffield, in the north of England.

About 4 years ago Selina became unwell. She was diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension and cardiac problems and then, under the stress of trying to cope with these difficulties, she developed depression and anxiety. She received very positive support from her family and her health support worker – as a result of which she was motivated to join ESOL classes. That was where she was encouraged to enter the Reading Ahead challenge by her tutor Shena Moore.

All the women in Selina’s class were enthusiastic about the challenge, which involved reading six books. Selina received a certificate form Sheffield’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Denise Fox, at Sheffield Central Library for completing the challenge.

Selina was so enthusiastic about the challenge and determined to do well that her health issues retreated to the back of her mind. Her main focus was to be successful in achieving her goal of winning the first prize of this national incentive.

And she did achieve it! Shelina won a trip to London for herself and her husband.
