THAMES Head gets MBE

KAREN BROCK, the head of the Tower Hamlets Arts & Music Education Service (THAMES), was awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours list. Ms Brock received the award in recognition of her services to education.

Ms Brock said, “I am delighted to receive this honour and am very grateful that my work in education has been recognised in this way. It is also a testament to the fantastic work carried out by my colleagues and the wider contribution that they have made to THAMES over the past decade.”

The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, congratulated Ms Brock on the award, saying, “It is a richly deserved recognition for the innovative work that the THAMES service carries out. We have excellent schools that provide a first rate education in the borough and it is clear that Karen’s dedication to delivering outstanding arts and music education is part of our success.”

THAMES was ten years old last year. The service provides opportunities for young people across the borough to learn about music and the arts. Over 11,500 pupils are now learning musical instruments every week and musical instruments are loaned to them free of charge. The borough is home to the Tower Hamlets Youth Orchestra, two music centres and numerous music ensembles. The service also looks after the Tower Hamlets Youth Dance Company and a Young Artists and Curators group.

With the Council having to cut back on all manner of services for young people, its commitment to the arts is very welcome.
