CAREFULLY planned robbery in Walthamstow left a security guard in hospital with gunshot wounds to his leg as two suspects escaping with a large amount of cash.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 18th May – shortly before 3.30am. Two security guards were delivering cash to the Nationwide Building Society in High Street, Walthamstow, when they were approached by two men who were both wearing dark clothing and motorcycle helmets.

One of the two men shot one of the guards several times, with a handgun – wounding his leg. They grabbed the cash which was being delivered and drove off in a red Ford Fiesta which had been parked in the nearby Erskine Road.

The guard was taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery before being discharged later that day.

Detective Constable Dave Crewe of the Metropolitan Police Flying Squad, which is investigating the incident, said, “This was an armed robbery in which a shocking level of violence was used. The security guard is extremely lucky that he did not suffer life-threatening injuries as a result of being shot. I would urge anyone who has any information about the men who did this to come forward and talk to police and prevent them from carrying out a similar crime.”

Men who are prepared to use a gun on a security guard may escalate their actions on a second robbery and be prepared to shoot a victim. Also, once shots are being fired on London’s streets, there is a risk of injury to innocent bystanders too.

Anyone who can help identify the suspects or has any other information about this robbery is urged to ring the Flying Squad incident room on 020-8345 4215 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111 (where you can give information anonymously).
