AT THE RECENT Bangladesh Regeneration Trust UK (BRTUK) elections, Nazir Ali was elected Chair for another term – alongside Yahya Alkasmeah (Secretary) and Aros Ali (Treasurer).

BRTUK is a UK-registered charity established to carry out various forms of regeneration work in the areas of education, health and livelihood within Bangladesh. It provides a platform for young second, third and fourth generation Bangladeshis to support various social development initiatives across Bangladesh.

Projects focus on the three key areas of development: promoting education; creating livelihood schemes; supporting healthcare.

BRTUK is recognised by the NGO Affairs Bureau (NGOAB) of Bangladesh to work with the stricken Rohingya and has been supporting the refugees with primary care and with an initial emergency survival response. In total more than £25,000 worth of aid has been distributed, and further support is required for ongoing support work.

Chair Nazir Ali commented, “Our short-term challenges are securing corporate funds and improving on branding and marketing. In the long term the status of the Rohingya refugees will be a major challenge for all local and national NGOs.”

During the next financial year, BRTUK intends to be a fully-fledged registered charity in Bangladesh and secure various distribution points across the country.
