AS RAMADAN drew to a close, roads were closed off in the Chrisp Street area after a collision between three cars in Cordelia Street, E14. The cars were badly damaged and the emergency services were quickly in attendance.
One eye witness reported that passers-by ran up to the cars and tried to rip the doors off to get the occupants out. Their job was made all the more difficult because the front ends of the vehicles were stoved in.
One of those involved was overheard speaking to the London Ambulance Service on the telephone, saying that the vehicles had been speeding and did not see each other.
Members of the public gathered at the scene and there was speculation that the collision was the result of high spirits following the Lockdown, combined with excitement that Eid is expected to occur tomorrow, Sunday. Others doubted that the accident had been caused by carelessness, as community leaders had been calling for restraint over Ramadan – including observing the Lockdown.
The incident occurred after police had been warning that there has been a sharp increase in speeding cars in London, as well as fatal road accidents over the Lockdown period – despite a reduction in the amount of traffic on the roads.
•Story Update Comments on social media have indicated that the collision was between two moving vehicles, which in turn then hit a number of parked vehicles which were not occupied. There are also reports that one woman received immediate medical attention at the scene, which continued while she was being cut out of the vehicle.
