Campaign and cultivate!

November 02, 2015

The November issue of the Voice, newsletter of the East London Garden Society (ELGS) is out – bringing readers the usual mix of campaigning issues and horticultural know-how.

The important local news is that ELGS is bringing together the community in Bethnal Green to deal with neglect in Bethnal Green Gardens and in the open spaces around Columbia Road. Two groups, the Friends of Bethnal Green Gardens and the Friends of Columbia Road, are now working together as a Friends Group to improve the whole area.

The campaign to ensure that planting in the Bishops Gate Goods Yard development is community friendly (and, in particular, is designed to help cut pollution) continues. The ELGS is urging readers to sign the Mayor of Hackney’s petition on: https://www.change.org/p/boris-johnson-withdraw-your-support-for-two-luxury-skyscrapers-in-hackney-2

Other campaigning issues include a garden bridge across the Thames and the gardens around the Crossness Pumping Station.

What can we grow to eat? This month’s advice ranges from how to harvest the humble dandelion through to how to grow the far from humble saffron – with lots of information and discussion in between. It’s a good read – both for the committed gardener and for the novice who takes an interest in their surroundings.
