POLICE HAVE appealed to the public for help in identifying a knife-wielding street robber who committed a sexual assault when his attempted robbery went wrong.

The attack took place at approximately 10.30pm on 3rd May, but police have now put together a set of still images and CCTV footage taken near the scene of the crime which they hope will identify a man they wish to speak to in connection with this assault, even at this late stage.

The incident occurred on Fentons Avenue in Newham. A woman was returning home from work when she heard footsteps running up behind her. As she turned round, she saw a man in a balaclava hat. He produced a knife and demanded that she give him money.

The woman explained that she had no cash on her – and showed him her empty purse to prove it. The attacker then knocked her bag to the ground. The nature of the attack then changed. The man suddenly exposed himself to her and threatened to assault her sexually. He pulled her towards him and forced her to endure him kissing her – and then he ran away.

The Metropolitan Police Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Command (CASO) are investigating. The man they wish to speak to is described as black, approximately 18-23 years old and around 5ft 5ins tall. He had short black hair and spots or scars on his face. He was wearing a rolled up balaclava, dark trousers and trainers. He also had on a dark jacket or top which was a lighter colour on the body area but had dark coloured sleeves. There was a dark stripe on the front, going about half way down the jacket and a light patch on the left arm.

Detective Constable Tom Prosser from CASO said, “This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim which has left her shaken and scared to go out. The suspect is clearly a dangerous individual who we need to identify.”

Anyone who was in the area at the time, saw the incident or has any other information which could help identify the assailant is asked to call the police on 020-8217 7415. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111, where you can give information anonymously.
