Final push to fund life-saving cancer treatment

Mo Haque

Channel S (Sky 814) and the Beani Bazar Cancer & General Hospital have teamed up to help me, Mo Haque, by organising a live TV appeal on 9th November, from 6pm to 1am. This a last push to raise the remaining funds for my treatment.

I anxiously began fundraising in April 2016, as a last resort, with a target of £200,000 for an immunotherapy treatment not available on the NHS. After a year of standard NHS treatment, including 18 cycles of chemotherapy as well as surgery, my cancer continued to progress. The NHS could no longer help as they “ran out of treatment”. Immunotherapy, available privately, offered my last chance.

To date we have raised £130,000, allowing me to start the treatment. Thankfully the first scan results since the treatment started, have been very positive. All four of my tumours have begun to shrink: one by 68%, one by 29% and two by 40%.

The treatment is long term. It can last for two years, costing approximately £7,000 every three weeks. My MP Keir Starmer has represented me from the beginning and even held a reception in Parliament in October. Unfortunately no one from the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on cancer or the Department of Health attended.

I am being continuously contacted by other patients who have been told they are suitable for immunotherapy, yet this remains outside the NHS. The statistics are alarming. Cancer Research UK states that one in two people will develop cancer in their lifetime. I’m looking to set up a non-profit making organisation that helps other people in a similar situation.
