Balagonj FC 1-0 Moulvibazar FC

Hackney was the host borough as twelve teams representing the areas that comprise the Bangladeshi region of Sylhet celebrated their football heritage as the sun shone down on this London borough.

The event was the inaugural Greater Sylhet Upazila Cup. Among the banter, the fanfare, the duels and the mismatches at Mabley Green one winner had to emerge. The mood matched the weather, as players and a few hundred fans converged onto the Astro Turf next to Hackney marshes to savour a feast of football.

Balagonj FC met Moulvibazar FC in the final to finish off a memorable day. Both teams fielded veterans over 35, with many a celebrated stalwart taking to the field of play. With energy levels down after a hard day’s play and both teams reluctant to go all-out attack, it looked likely that one goal would nick a win. As fans encouraged attacking play to try to avoid spot kicks, up popped Iftekhar Ahmed, who finished off a neat move and scored for Balagonj. It was enough to win the match.

Jubilant Balagonj manager Mamun Chowdhury said: “It’s been a tremendous day for everyone. There has been nothing but fun. We are very proud to be inaugural winners and look forward to many more footballing get-togethers like this in the future. The quality of football and energy has been outstanding all day – and win, lose or draw I have seen nothing but smiles from everybody.”

Businessman Kam Ali came along to support Balagonj. The community activist said: “The community has won today. It’s rare to see such happiness and unity and I hope these events can become more frequent as they will allow a social platform as well as an opportunity to inspire future generations.”

Faruque Mahfuz Ahmed of organisers Sonalii Otith said: “We have enjoyed and witnessed a great day with plenty of fun and community spirit. It’s been immense and the football has been tremendous. I’m sad that we had to have one winner because in my opinion everyone who attended today deserves a medal.”
