THE MURDER of a teenager in Hackney Wick last week saw Hackney’s Green Mayor, Zoë Garbett, and Deputy Mayor Cllr Dylan Law express their condolences to the family and commitment to community safety.
The statement reads:
“We are extremely shocked and saddened about the horrific murder of a boy in Hackney last night. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with everyone affected, including his family and friends, who will be grieving their loss.
“The Council is in contact with the emergency services and we will work with them to support those who have been directly affected. Specialist council teams are on hand to support those who knew the victim, students at local schools and the wider community.
“We know serious violence is extremely worrying for all the community, particularly for young people and parents with children living in the area. We are committed to working with the local community, youth organisations and schools to help keep everyone in Hackney safe.”
The Council added that its youth service, Young Hackney, has sent youth workers to the area to support young people in the aftermath of the incident. This is a good response from a Mayor who has been in office for less than a month. However, there is too much violent crime in Hackney, especially among young people. Residents will be hoping that the Mayor can find a way to use Young Hackney to support young residents and lure them away from crime and “gang” mentality.
●The Council also reminded residents that anyone with any information about the incident should call police on 101 and quote reference CAD/6692/25MAY. Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111, You do not need to give your name and your call will be confidential.
●Anyone concerned about the safety of young people in the borough can contact the Council’s First Access & Screening Team (FAST) on 020-8356 5500.
●To report anti-social behaviour, call 020-8356 3310.
