A LEADING Indian cricketer has been accused of “mental torture” by his wife. Hasin Jahan, 26, a former model and cheerleader who married Mohammed Shami five years ago, said that the fast bowler, 27, was guilty of adultery, domestic violence and physical torture.

Shami has played for India on 87 occasions over the last five years, including 30 Test matches, but he was not on the list of players contracted to play for India announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India on 8th March – which, ironically, is International Women’s Day.

The player has denied all the allegations made by his wife – who posted on Facebook messages which she alleged were sent by her husband to other women. She said that she had found the chats, photos and videos on a phone hidden in Shami’s car.

It is also understood that Jahan has alleged that Shami’s brother attempted to rape her – with Shami’s consent – and that his family knew about his infidelities and did nothing. Going beyond the domestic sphere, Jahan has also accused her husband of match-fixing – calling him a cheat in his cricket as well as at home.

Shami said that his wife was involved in a conspiracy to defame him and that all her allegations were completely false. He responded to the allegations of match-fixing by alleging that his wife is mentally unstable and threatened to take legal action against her.

However, he has now been charged with domestic violence by the police. While the exact charges and details of the police case are unknown, the laws under which Shami has been charged relate to attempted murder, poisoning and criminal intimidation.

Shami is from Uttar Pradesh and plays for Bengal in domestic fixtures. It is understood that he and Jahan have one daughter.
