Man jailed after stabbing in Hackney

IT WAS BACK IN March last year that police were called out to Lower Clapton Road in the early hours of the morning by reports that a member of the public had been stabbed.

The emergency services found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds.  He was able to tell them that he had been attacked in Ashanti Mews, a nearby Alley, but then he lost consciousness. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and had a number of operations and spent weeks in an induced coma.

Police officers from Central East CID investigated and found a red bag in the alleyway, with a bloodstained knife in it. They also spotted a suspect on CCTV.  Public CCTV showed the suspect in the area of a hostel on Lansdowne Drive. Police went over to the hostel, to view their CCTV. Tampawo came into the hostel while they were there. Police arrested him and charged him with attempted murder, and he was remanded in custody.

This is the story that led to Duclant Tampawo, 30, appearing at the Old Bailey.  He appeared on 3rd February, when he pleaded guilty to Section 18 Grievous Bodily Harm. Last week he returned for sentencing – and was sent to jail for 14 years and one month. He was also given a three year extended licence.

Detective Constable Ben Stone, who had led the investigation, welcomed the news, saying, “Tampawo carried out a brutal attack, stabbing the victim multiple times which caused significant internal damage, and left him bleeding on the ground. He has never explained the reasons for this assault which left the victim in a critical condition and requiring extensive hospital treatment for a number of months. He is clearly a dangerous offender and we are pleased he is now behind bars.”
