A MAN has been jailed for life after a shooting classified as attempted murder. He did not pull the trigger himself. Although he was convicted of attempted murder, he recruited someone else to carry out the shooting.
The jailed man has been named as Beytullah Gunduz, 39, of Hackney. The police found analysed phones and looked at CCTV and linked Gunduz with the man who did the shooting. There was close contact between the two which supported the claim that Gunduz was guilty of conspiracy. The evidence was heard on 5th June during a trial at the Old Bailey. Gunduz appeared there again on 25th September, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment, to serve a minimum of 20 years.
The man who fired the shot has been named as Dogan Over, 41, who was a known associate of Over. His car was recorded on CCTV, which led to the police identifying him. He had driven past the same restaurant the week before, but the victim was not there at the time and after driving past several times, no shots were fired. Over fled to Turkey shortly after the shooting and police are trying to trace him.
The shooting happened outside a restaurant in Dalston on 20th June 2025. Gunduz was a member of an organised crime group and his job was to have the victim shot. Although the victim, who was 37, was not killed, he was left with life-changing injuries.
Detective Inspector Iain Wallace, who led the investigation, condemned the shooting, saying, “This was a calculated and ruthless attack carried out in a busy public area which could have easily resulted in the loss of life. Gunduz played a central role in orchestrating this shooting and showed a complete disregard for the safety of both the victim and the wider community. My team utilised CCTV, phone data and forensics to build a compelling case and secure this conviction, despite Gunduz’s efforts to evade detection. Violence linked to organised crime groups has no place on London’s streets. We remain committed to identifying those involved in serious violence and ensuring they are brought before the courts.”
