IT WAS all smiles as teams took part in a tournament for the Mayor’s Cricket Cup over August and September. It wasn’t so much “Cup” as “Cups”, as six winners proudly took home their trophies.
Mayor Lutfur Rahman voiced his enthusiasm for the competition, saying, “It has been fantastic to see another successful Cricket Cup tournament. Congratulations to all the players who stepped up to the crease and helped make this year’s competition a real hit. The enthusiasm, teamwork and sportsmanship on display made for an inspiring celebration of sport.”
(We think that “sportsmanship” may have been an editor’s error, as the Mayor is very keen on promoting women and girls playing sport and would have been keen on using the term “sportspersonship” to signal an equalities-based approach to team games.)
The tournament was organised by the Council’s sports and physical activities team, with support from Capital Kids Cricket and the London Cricket League. The event was sponsored by Guildmore, Arada, CWG, Rineys and Clarion Futures.
Cricket is thriving in the borough. The Council has invested in new cricket facilities in Victoria Park and Millwall Park and there are plans to build more practice facilities at Stepney Green Park and King Edward Memorial Park. Fourteen junior and youth teams took part in the Mayor’s Cup this year – it could be more next year!
