Following a training programme, a residential trip and a rigorous interview process, young Tower Hamlets student Mazhar Alam has successfully made it through the selection process onto the shortlist of suitable candidates to become the Young Mayor of Tower Hamlets. Now he is requesting friends and well wishers to support him when voting takes place on 25th January 2017.

Mazhar is an exceptional student at school and his teachers consider him a role model for others. He enjoys paragliding and represents Wapping Youth FC, plays in local leagues and regularly attends self defence classes. He has been a keen community activist from a young age and supports many local issues, including the Save KEMP (Shadwell Park) campaign during which he camped with residents at the park to protect it.

Mazhar has also been active in collecting signatures for petitions for the council and was also a part of the local Scouts – which he credits as helping him develop his personal skills. The youngster is well travelled and understands diversity and cohesion. Throughout his travels he has visited many parts of Europe and the UK, including Switzerland, Germany, France, Holland, Italy, north Wales, Cornwall and the Lake District. His humanitarian work has led him to visit the Jungle Refugee Camp in Calais, where he helped to distribute aid. Mazhar has attended many interfaith events and is a member of the Tower Hamlets Youth Council.

Mazhar said, “I have a strong vision of how to bring positive change and will be a strong voice for the youth in Tower Hamlets. I am happy to meet with young people like myself who would like to discuss the plans I have. My aim is to educate, inspire and empower the youth of Tower Hamlets – and, with the support of my fellow young people, I can be a success and a loud voice.”
