A DEDICATED TEAM of runners from the Newham-based Ummah Welfare Trust has completed an inner city half marathon to raise funds and awareness of the plight of Syrian orphans.

The three runners – Emdad Rahman, Md Imran and 13 year old Shafi Rahman – took to the streets of Barking to start the run. The route took in Newham, Tower Hamlets, King’s Cross, The British Museum and Madame Tussauds before finishing a stone’s throw from Lord’s at Hanover Gate, in the shadows of Regents Park Mosque.

Runner Md Imran said, “We have had a very good, uninterrupted run. In fact two of us didn’t realise we hadn’t drunk any water for the duration of the run. This will greatly boost the tremendous work Ummah Welfare Trust carries out. I would like to say thank you to all our supporters.”

The carnage in Syria has been going on for approaching half a decade now, with little sign of respite. Thousands of innocent children have known nothing but war and many of these children have been orphans for as long as they can remember.

As part of the aid mission to the traumatised victims of this war, Ummah Welfare Trust has been on the ground, supporting orphans through sponsorship and grants, alongside other projects.

The team has so far  raised over £1,000. For more information about their fundraising and humanitarian work, go to: www.uwt.org
