Seven year old Sangeeta Digpal has won Tesco’s Ramadan poster competition. Along with hundreds of other entrants from across the country Sangeeta designed a poster showing what Ramadan means to her – and she emerged as the national winner.

Sangeeta’s poster will now been seen all around the UK. It will feature on a Tesco van which will be delivering food to 20 specially selected mosques during Ramadan. Tesco has donated the food – over £20,000 worth of Ramadan related products such as big bags of chapatti flour, rice and oil – to the mosques, which can either use the products for their own soup kitchens or donate it to the local food bank.

Sangeeta has received a £300 donation for her school, Clara Grant Primary School in Bow, as well as £100 in Tesco vouchers for herself.

Tower Hamlets Council has only provided comments from Cllr Rachael Saunders, Deputy Mayor for Education and Children’s Services in response to Sangeeta’s triumph.

Cllr Saunders appeared to demote Ramadan to a cultural phenomenon, saying: “Lots of children in the borough got involved in the Ramadan poster competition, which was a great way for children of all faiths and none to learn about the cultural significance of this month. It’s great to see another Tower Hamlets success story – congratulations to Sangeeta!”
