While opposition parties in Tower Hamlets do their best to rubbish the Town Hall Administration, the Local Government Chronicle has nominated the Council for seven of its local government awards which recognise achievement. This is one of the highest numbers of nominations of any council in theUK.

The Borough’s nominations include one recognising the work of Children’s Services in “Improving the Life Chances of Children and Young People” and another which recognises the partnership work for the “Improving Pathways for People with Dementia and their Carers” in the Health & Social Care category.

Its work during the Olympics has led to the Council being shortlisted in two further categories: Public Sector Partnership (recognising the ways in which the council dealt with the impact of the Games) and the Management Team of the Year award, jointly with the other Boroughs hosting the Games.

Tower Hamlets Mayor Lutfur Rahman recognised the Council’s success was in very large part due to the efforts of staff.  He said: “I am delighted that the LGC Awards have recognised the hard work and significant outcomes delivered by teams across the council in the last year.”

Cllr. Alibor Choudhury, Cabinet Member for Resources, echoed the Mayor’s sentiments – while  not forgetting his special responsibility for budgetary matters.  He said: “I am pleased that our staff continue to deliver high quality services despite the challenging financial climate with government cuts. The competition for these awards is always tough so it is a great achievement for staff to be shortlisted and I would personally like to congratulate them.”
