FIFTY YEARS AGO we were humming along to the hits of 1976. Some have magnificently stood the test of time; others have not. Join us on Memory Lane as we review them on their golden anniversaries.

Today we are looking at Abba’s Mamma Mia, which took the top spot on 27th January, where it stayed for two weeks.  It feels like this should be the moment when we say “Mamma Mia, one of Abba’s most famous tracks… but they are all so bloody famous, it’s hard to single this one out of their long list of hit singles for any special attention. Yes, it’s the only one to have been turned into a film, but it is by no means the only song that is played and re-played when we get nostalgic.

It is a formula pop-song, a catchy tune with a memorable (and nonsensical) lyric. Perhaps this is why it has stood the test of time. It’s still recognised from the opening bars alone. However, it was only at Number 1 for two weeks and, at the time, it was rather looked down on and was not at all cool.

Take a moment and have a listen – and a quick reflection on the fashions of the 1970s. Over 350 million You Tube Views for the official music video can’t be disregarded. And then go back to Bohemian Rhapsody, last week’s offer.
