Stop fly-grazing

For some time both Barking and Dagenham and Havering boroughs have received concerned calls regarding animals either suffering or being kept on open land owned by the council. For example, Barking and Dagenham received a report of two foals that were found dead next to a fence line, but when police arrived to investigate the carcasses had been removed. Neighbouring Havering borough has had similar wildlife problems, with animals grazing at inappropriate locations and being left out in freezing weather.

On 20th May, Wildlife Officers from Havering and Barking and Dagenham, in partnership with the council, seized five horses from Brettons Country Park. The owners of the horses have been summonsed to appear in court by Police Constable Kiddle who is Wildlife Officer for Havering Borough.

Fly-grazing can be an expensive problem for councils, police and animal charities. It can cause animals to suffer as the sites have not been cleared of dangers to the animals. It can also put members of the public in danger. If you have concerns about animals fly-grazing in your area please contact your police Wildlife Officer by dialling 101.
