ELN: Mayor Lutfur Rahman has announced that the London Borough of Tower Hamlets will make a formal application to be elevated to the status ofa ‘city’. His proposal has also received support from the property developers Canary Wharf Group. It is customary on certain special occasions during the Queen’s reign that suitably worthy towns are granted “City Status”. Such an occasion will be the Diamond Jubilee – signifying the sixty years Her Majesty has occupied the throne and this is due to be celebrated in June next year.During the Jubilee the Queen will issue “letters patent” to one lucky town in the United Kingdom and by so doing formally create the country’s newest city.It has been announced by the Mayor that Tower Hamlets will formally submit the bid to become Britain’s newest city to the Lord Chancellor today.Other places planning to make similar applications are thought to include Reading, Middlesbrough and Blackpool. In a statement published on the council website the mayor said city status, if it were conferred on the borough, would provide a “fantastic boost” to the East End.
