COUNCILLOR Victoria Obaze, Speaker of Tower Hamlets Council, has spoken about her passion to use her public platform to help raise awareness of issues which impact communities.

The Whitechapel Member took part in a Dementia Friends Information session to increase her own knowledge and awareness of dementia. Afterwards she said, “Today I’ve learnt five things that you should be aware of when it comes to dementia. Among other things, dementia is not a natural part of ageing and it’s not just about memory loss either. I’m really pleased to support such a hugely important cause and want to thank the dedicated volunteers for the excellent work that they have done so far in reaching more than 3 million people.”

Dementia Friends Champion Emdad Rahman said, “Dementia Friends Champions are trained volunteers who encourage others to learn a little bit about dementia. It’s really inspiring that the Speaker herself has backed such an important cause!”

The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition. Whether you attend a face-to-face Information Session or watch the online video, Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways in which you can help. From telling friends about the Dementia Friends programme to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts.
