Create celebrates: 40 years and counting

Cllr Gulam Choudhury, Cabinet member for Health, Wellbeing and Social Care, has congratulated the Create Community Hub as it celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Create was born as the Coborn Opportunities Project on 14th October 1984. The London Dockland Development Corporation was just a couple of years old; Margaret Thatcher was in her second term of office – and everyone was wondering whether George Orwell’s dystopian novel would come true.

Fortunately, the future was brighter for the Coborn Opportunities Project than Mr Orwell had feared. Forty years later, under the new name Create, it is offering a wide range of services for adults with learning disabilities. There’s activities, training, information and advice.

Cllr Choudhury said, “For 40 years, Create has been a place of support and care, and this event really captures the spirit of what our day centres are all about.” He was referring to Create’s celebration event on 18th October, which saw current and past service users join family members, staff and carers come together in the Mile End Ecology Pavillion to reflect, to look forward – and to enjoy a “service user-led DJ set from ‘Bubble Cub’.”
