National Literacy Trust issues #FitforLit challenge

August 21, 2020

THIS WEEK SEES the National Literacy Trust challenge families to take part in a #FitForLit challenge to raise money for the Trust. The charity works to improve the literacy and overall learning of disadvantaged children – work that has become even more important since the Coronavirus pandemic hit.

During this week – 17th to 23rd August – a host of TV stars, sports stars and top children’s authors will take part in a series of sporting challenges. Families are invited to pick a challenge and join in.

The Trust is no stranger to using sport to raise money, and each challenge has a literary twist. For example, one challenge involves doing “keepy uppies” while balancing a book on your head, and another involves telling a funny story while skipping.

Those who have done a challenge are asked to upload their photos and videos to social media using the hashtag #FitforLit, to donate £3 to the charity and to nominate three friends to take on the challenge.

The following stars have loaded challenges onto their social media: Ade Adepitan MBE (@AdeAdepitan), Danielle Brown MBE (@danibrownmbe); Matt Smith (@msmith850); Matt Oldfield (@footieheroesbks); Justin Somper (@JustinSomper); Tom Palmer (@tompalmerauthor); Dave Cousins (@DaveCousins9000); Tamsin Cooke (@TamsinCooke1); and Michaela Morgan (@MichaelamorganM).

Ade Adepitan MBE said, “I’ve always loved reading and I’ve always loved sport so what the National Literacy Trust is doing to combine both to help support children affected by COVID-19 is amazing. I’ll be taking part and donating and so should you!”

Danielle Brown MBE said, “I’m really excited to be supporting the National Literacy Trust’s #FitforLit campaign. It’s bringing together two of my favourite things, sport and reading, whilst helping level the playing field for disadvantaged children whose literacy has been hugely affected by lockdown.”

Jim Sells, Sport and Literacy Programme Manager at the National Literacy Trust, said, “I’ve seen first-hand how sport can inspire even the most reluctant children to get reading and writing. So after such a significant disruption to children’s literacy and learning as a result of COVID-19, we must do everything we can to support those who have fallen furthest behind.”
