EXERCISE TRAILWALKER started out as a military training exercise in Hong Kong in 1981. Organised by the Queen’s Gurkha Signals, and taking place along the famous Maclehose Trail, the exercise sought to test the endurance and teamwork of soldiers of the Queen’s Gurkha Signals over a long and arduous course.
In 1986, Trailwalker was opened to civilian participation for the first time, and now, following the move of the Queen’s Gurkha Signals to the UK, the 100k event takes place across the South Downs, with hundreds of civilians setting off alongside the Gurkhas.
The Trailwalker is a unique opportunity to put the mind and body to the test and is the ultimate team endurance event. The challenge is to walk, jog or run 100km non-stop across the South Downs Way in under 30 hours in a team.
This year an East London team will take part – trekking the full 100km across the South Downs in under 30 hours (we hope!) and doing its bit to help end poverty with every step. The team will raise money for Oxfam and the Gurkha community in Nepal, push themselves to the limit, and face a challenge to remember the rest of their lives.
Team captain Anam Hoque commented, “This is a challenge like no other and will mentally and physically test us all. This is all about teamwork, digging deep, unity and perseverance throughout, and we have come together for a fantastic cause. I am confident in our team and our ability to get the job done. As always we have our eye on the prize – to support a great charitable cause!!
