JUSTICE HAS finally been done, after three men from Newham were sent to prison for committing rape and robbery – in the Hackney home of their two female victims.
It was around 11pm on 12th June 2019 when three men armed with knives and an axe broke into the victims’ home and rape them. The men took £1,250 in cash and a mobile phone – and left the scene.
It is not easy to report a sexual assault or rape. In this case, one of the victims went to a sexual health clinic the following day, where she told staff what had happened to her and her housemate. A nurse helped her to call police. Police investigated the case and used DNA evidence and mobile phone information to help identify and locate the suspects. Two were arrested on 9th July and the third suspect was arrested two days later.
The three suspects appeared at Wood Green Crown Court on 12th February this year, where they were convicted (see below) and remanded in custody. They returned to the Court on 6th April, where they were sentenced as follows.
•Edmilson Caimanque, 24, of St. Olaves Road, Newham, was found guilty of two counts of rape and two counts of robbery. He was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment for rape and nine years’ imprisonment for robbery. All sentences are to run concurrently.
•Adilson Mendes-Namdja-Uare, 23, of Lincoln Road, Newham, was found guilty of two counts of robbery and was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment.
•David Fonseca, 27, of Romford Road, Stratford, was found guilty of one count of rape and two counts of robbery. He was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for rape and nine years’ imprisonment for robbery. All sentences are to run concurrently.
Detective Sergeant Adam Knott from the Metropolitan Police Central East Public Protection unit said, “These men attacked two women who were sleeping in what should have been the safety of their own home. The evidence gathered, during what was an extremely complex and detailed investigation, led to the identification of all three defendants. The conviction and subsequent sentencing of these men is testament to the bravery of the two women who were attacked and I commend them for coming forward to report these horrendous crimes. The resulting sentence against these dangerous offenders may well have prevented other women from being harmed.”
