Why is Trump sending US ground troops to Iran?

HOW STRANGE that US President Donald Trump is sending US ground troops to a war he has, he tells us, “already won”. On the other hand, Trump has warned that the is about to escalate the won war. Is this what the troops are for?

The answer is, of course, that no one knows – probably even Trump himself doesn’t know. However, it is unlikely that troops are going because the parties are about to sign a peace deal. It is more likely that escalation is being planned – either in an attempt to push Iran into signing a peace plan, perhaps one with 15 points, or to take revenge on Iran for not surrendering by killing more of its citizens.

On 24th March, Trump has ordered some 2,000 personnel from the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division to head to the Middle East. They will join two Marine Expeditionary Units – also known as “Amphibious Ready Groups” already ordered to go to the area.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubion has said that the troops are going to take charge of nuclear material. This would be part of the US/Israeli aim to stop Iran being able to make nuclear weapons. Observers have suggested that the US and Israel may be aiming to take over Kharg Island, the main hub from which Iran exports oil – a move which could, the US believes, hasten Iran’s surrender.

It will end in tears. Once US troops are in Iran, they will become a target. The war will escalate into direct fighting between the Iranians and the occupying forces – with more Iranians suffering collateral damage.

Sending troops just reinforces what has been visible all along: Trump has no idea how to end this war.  Instead of sending troops in, Trump needs to get their air and sea borne troops out.  The war is doing too much damage in the Middle East. The economic effects are threatening a world-wide recession. World leaders need to stop appeasing the doddery, clueless Trump – and bring an end to the war.
