Twenty-four hours after nominations closed, Tower Hamlets Council has announced the list of candidate in the coming election for mayor of Tower Hamlets.
The leading two contenders are Cllr Rabina Khan and John Biggs AM. Cllr Khan has been Cabinet Member for Housing throughout Mayor Lutfur Rahman’s Administration and is recognised by many residents on social housing estates as a determined campaigner for tenants and leaseholder alike. John Biggs is a former Leader of Tower Hamlets Council has been a member of the London Assembly in recent years, a body which scrutinises the work of the London Mayor.
Cllr Peter Golds, currently Leader of the Conservative Group of Councillors, was an enthusiastic supporter of the election petition, but he is unlikely to be the beneficiary and will be hoping to hold on to third place at best.
The Liberal Democrats, UKIP and the Green Party are all standing candidates but are unlikely to improve on their very recent General Election performances.
Andy Erlam, one of the election petitioners, is standing for the Red Flag Anti-Corruption Party: the Party’s General Election performances suggest he should be able to get into three figures, but only just.
Venessa Hudson is presumably seeking the publicity which comes from an unscheduled election.
The most surprising candidates are two independent male Bangladeshi candidates: neither is likely to do well and there will be surprise in many sections of the community that they wish to risk taking vote off Cllr Khan.
