Bobbie Gentry took I’ll never fall in love again to the top of the UK Charts in October 1969, where it lasted just one week. It wasn’t necessarily a kindness to the listening public – but it was an act repeated by several other artistes over the years.
It’s a catchy number, but it manages to be rather annoying at the same time. Perhaps this is because it describes the core issues of human relationships in very mundane and everyday terms.
Sing along if you wish, but to explore the contradictions of heterosexual relationships read Dorothy Parker.
