WATER SAFETY is not only an issue for the warm summer months, warns the London Fire Brigade. Icy conditions during the winter bring problems of their own.
This is a serious concern for Tower Hamlets. The borough’s southern border is the Thames, and canals run through the area too.
On 7th January, Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said, “This evening we’ve received numerous calls to rescue people from frozen lakes, ponds & other bodies of water. I’m urging Londoners to please take care & stay off the ice…
“Walking onto frozen water is extremely dangerous. Ice may look solid but is often thinner than it appears and can vary in thickness, especially away from the edge. Never assume it will support your weight.
“We also see people putting themselves at risk trying to rescue pets trapped on ice. Dog owners should keep pets on a lead and under close control near frozen water…
“Firefighters have specialist training and equipment for ice rescues. If a person or animal is in trouble, do not go onto the ice yourself. Call 999, keep them in sight, and wait for help.”
