TOWER HAMLETS Council is overflowing with news about the achievements of its CCTV system. There has been a great deal of investment to improve the hardware (and the operators), and it seems that is now paying dividends.
The latest news is that the cameras – sadly – caught a hit and run incident. Operators were able to see the registration number of the car involved. This detailed identification work has been made possible by new investment in Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. The number was passed to the police, who arrested the driver on suspicion of drink driving.
It can be worrying to feel that you are being watched as you go about your daily business. However, the knowledge that anyone who tries to do harm to you must be a comfort – and a welcome one.
Residents are now asking whether the CCTV system can be used to track down some of the people and vehicles leaving rubbish on the streets. That would be another welcome payback from the investment.
