The last day of July marks the release of Bangistan – an uproarious satire on fundamentalism starring Riteish Deshmukh and Pulkit Samrat as two blundering terrorists. It’s a comic tale with a strong underlying message highlighting the futility of violence, religious divisions and cultural prejudice while also promoting peace, religious unity and harmony in society.
The film tells the story of rival rabble-rousing ragtag organisations, Al-Kaam Tamam and Maa Ka Dal, which seperately recruit and brainwash Hafeez and Praveen to disrupt an International Peace Conference in Krakow, Poland, to benefit their own group. The two men decide to swap their identities and faiths. They end up sharing a flat when they arrive in Krakow – and lots of subsequent adventures.
Over the last few years there has been a big rise in such quirky films, with the likes of Go Goa Gone, Jolly LLB, Fukrey and Vicky Donor being well received by audiences worldwide – highlighting the evolution of writing within the Hindi film industry. The film depends on the actors bringing out the bromance between the two leading characters. Bollywood audiences first encountered the concept of Bromance in Dil Chahta Hai, brought to Bollywood by the makers of Bangistan, Excel Entertaininnent.
Speaking about the bond between the lead actors, the film’s producer Ritesh Sidhwani said, “Bangistan is about two unlikely people finding themselves and eventually becoming buddies in the most unusual circumstances through their journey. Both Riteish and Pulkit enjoyed each other’s company while shooting the film, which translates on screen.” Debutant director Karan Anshuman added, “Bangistan makes for a most unlikely Bromance because the lead characters are antithetical in every manner, making their journey a real blast.”
And the entertainment of Bangistan could last longer than a trip to the cinema, as the world of Bangistan now has its own website. Major tourists sites are featured, along with all the important people – and even the country’s own newspaper, The Bangistan Times. Visitors can learn about “Star*ucks Coffee” and “FcDonalds-Killer Fast Food” before going on to spot the “Keep Calm, I Am Not A Terrorist” T-shirts.
