A dogged 59 from newcomer Juwel Roy could not prevent Scintilla CC losing to arch rivals Barking CC. The latest Essex County Cricket League Premier Division clash saw both teams play out a thriller in the much anticipated Barking & Dagenham Derby. Ahead of Dementia Awareness Week, both teams came together to become Dementia Friends and offer their support for the groundbreaking social action movement.
Barking were dealt an early blow as Pulkit Gupta left the field due to a hand injury. After medical treatment, the Barking star was deemed unfit to resume his place alongside his team mates on the field of play.
Scintilla batted first to reach 219/10 after 41 overs, with Juwel Roy (59), Aminul Shihan (48), and Hanif Kibria (33) top scorers. Barking required 39 overs to overhaul the visitors’ total with five wickets to spare. The pick of the batsmen were Umer (95 not out), Qureshi (43) and skipper Ehsan (40).
Scintilla captain Sajal Rahman said: “The derby game is always a big occasion for everyone and it is disappointing to lose to our close rivals. The teams showed a great competitive edge throughout and the spirit all round was excellent. As far as I am concerned both outfits are ambassadors for the game of cricket.”
Barking captain Ehsan Afzal added: “It’s always a boost to win the derby. It was great that we all united to become Dementia Friends ahead of Dementia Awareness Week. Sport is a fantastic way to support and raise awareness of community issues. Both teams are a credit to Barking & Dagenham and cricket in general.”
