Barking & Dagenham at work – on film

Film-makers Close and Remote have been working with Dagenham-based builders Oakleafe ltd to create the Castle of Trades: a unique cross between a castle, a cinema and a van. And this month it’s offering the public a unique film experience – for free. Here’s how it works.

First, find the van. On Saturday, 10th October it will be on the Gascoigne Estate, outside Studio 3 Arts Living Museum Shop on St Mary’s Parade, IG11 7TF. On Tuesday 13th October it will be in Barking Town Square, IG11 7LU. It will be at both venues between 12 noon and 5pm.

Second, enter the “castle” via the drawbridge and watch a series of one-minute films, made in Barking and Dagenham this year, of residents talking about their working lives over the last 50 years. Free popcorn is available to enhance your viewing experience.

Third, you can record your own message to the workers of the future! What has your working life been like? What jobs do you think will disappear in the next 50 years?

Close and Remote is also making a longer film with residents, which will be entitled “We are what we are”. The premiere will be on 21st January, in partnership with the Broadway Theatre.
