A 31 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a 79 year old man in Huddleston Close, E2 (just north of the old Town Hall in Patriot Square) on Sunday (23rd August). The suspect was arrested in hospital but, after treatment, was taken to a local police station.
The arrest arises after an incident in which a total of five people were injured. The carnage was discovered after the London Ambulance Service arrived at the address – and quickly summoned police to attend too. It seems that the ambulance had been called by worried neighbours, who had heard a commotion in the premises.
Three children were among the injured: a two year old boy and an eleven year old girl had been stabbed, and a 13 year old boy had relatively minor injuries. The three were taken to a local hospital, where they remain. All three are said to be in a stable condition.
The fourth person injured was the 79 year old man: he also had stab injuries and was taken to hospital, but he sadly died later that evening. Although he has not been formally identified, his next of kin have been informed. The fifth person injured, the suspect, had what were described by the police as self-inflicted injuries.
Neighbours are said to be horrified by such a horrific crime occurring in what is usually a very quiet and peaceful family neighbourhood.
Officers are now investigating the murder. They are not seeking any other persons in connection with the crime and to date they have an open mind on a possible motive.
