The year now coming to a close marks the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth – but the centenary celebrations of this British composer’s life will not close until next spring. One of the highlights of the commemorative musical events will be a performance of The Prince of the Pagodas by the Birmingham Royal Ballet at the London Coliseum in Charing Cross from 26th to 29th March 2014. In the production, choreography is by David Bintley and the design is by Rae Smith, while music will be provided by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia under Koen Kessels
Pagodas is Britten’s only full length ballet score. Based on a Japanese fairy tale, it tells the story of Princess Sakura, who refuses all the wealthy men who come to woo her and instead follows Prince Salamander on a magical journey to the Land of the Pagodas which may bring peace to her father’s kingdom.
