A nasty new scam has come to light in Bow. A resident answered a knock at the door and found two men who claimed that they were bailiffs. They demanded £100 from her, stating that she owed the money because she was not on the electoral register.
Fortunately the resident sent them packing. She also informed the police, as well as her local councillor, Cllr Marc Francis, so that other people could learn about what these imposters are up to.
Will Tuckley, Chief Executive of Tower Hamlets Council and Electoral Registration Officer for the borough, said: “Residents should never be asked for money for failing to register to vote or at any point of the registration process. Our canvassers may visit residents’ homes to verify who is living there – but they would carry identification and would explain that it is a legitimate aspect of council work.”
Mr Tuckley is the new Chief Executive, selected for the post after the Government’s Commissioners insisted that the Council appoint a Chief Executive. Mr Tuckley was previously Chief Executive of Bexley Council. He is notorious for having been in the top ten highest paid local authority officers in London during his last years in Bexley.
Any resident who is asked for money in circumstances similar to those above should not let the imposters in to their home. They should not pay over any money. As soon as it is safe to do so, they should report the matter to the police on 101. In an emergency, dial 999 to reach the police.
