Emdad Rahman ::
Residents in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets today completed the end of the month of Ramadan by performing Eid Ul Fitr prayers at Stepney Park.
The event, manned by volunteers was attended by 5,000 worshippers and passed off without a hitch. The Eid prayer was led by Shaikh Abdur Rahman Madani, the Imam of Jamiatul Ummah.
Deputy Mayor Ohid Ahmed said: “This Eid in the Park bought back memories from my childhood, it was a great event.”
Co-ordinator Fokrul Hoque said: “The spirit today has been amazing and to bring so many people together in a peaceful setting has been impressive.
“We advised worshippers, where possible, to travel by foot and leave their cars behind to avoid inconvenience to locals. Our volunteers also ensured that the park was cleaned and left in a cleaner condition than before.
“Special thanks go to the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillors, and Islamic Relief for their unequivocal support.
“I am very pleased with the way the management committee, volunteers and the community have come together to make this event such a success.”
“Eid in the Park” started in 2008 and is the brainchild of Tower Hamlets Labour Councillor Abdal Ullah. The Councillor was also behind the Trafalgar Square based “Eid in the square.”
He said: “It’s wonderful that Eid in the park has become such a flagship event in the annual calendar, and the community can be proud of the way it united to celebrate such an auspicious day.
“I wish everyone Eid Mubarak and wish them a joyous day.”
Todays event was supported by the Mayor of Tower Hamlets and charity partner Islamic Relief.
