FIFA’s Gianni Infantino survives ethics probe

To have one president accused of dodgy dealings while in office is a misfortune. To have two was nearly a disaster for FIFA, the international governing body of football – but now new President Gianni Infantino has been declared not guilty of any improper conduct.

Infantino took over earlier this year, when Sepp Blatter was forced to resign. He then faced allegations that he had improperly claimed expenses, appointed staff without following procedures and had travelled at the expense of countries which were bidding to host the World Cup – setting up a possible conflict of interests.

The allegations were investigated by FIFA’s Ethics Committee, which has now announced that Infantino has not broken FIFA’s Ethics Code and his conduct has not led to any conflicts of interest. Their decision was welcomed by Infantino, who thanked the Ethics Committee for their work in establishing the truth.

Although he has been cleared of these particular allegations, Gianni Infantino still has a long battle ahead of him to clear FIFA of all hints of scandal and errors of judgement so that fans can fully trust the way world football is run.
