The Woman in Black hits No.1 at UK box office
By Stuart O’Connor
OK, I have to declare a little self interest here. I really do like a good horror film. I don’t really favour any one genre over another – I love a good movie no matter what genre it’s in – but we do need to see more good horror films at our local cineplexes.
So I was pleased to see Hammer’s The Woman in Black romp home at No.1 position at the UK box office for its opening weekend. According to the press release:
“Hammer’s chilling ghost story The Woman in Black shattered UK box office expectations during its three-day opening weekend, grossing £3.13m with a per-screen average of £7,800 for distributor Momentum Pictures. The film’s UK success followed last weekend’s sensational US release, which opened at an outstanding $21m.
“Commenting on the success of The Woman in Black, Simon Oakes, president & CEO of Hammer and vice-chairman of Exclusive Media, said: ‘We are delighted The Woman in Black has performed so well here and in the US. This is Hammer’s first ghost story and we’re delighted UK audiences have embraced it with so much enthusiasm and shows that British audiences enjoy intelligent genre which are the types of films Hammer is known for.’ “
So The Woman in Black has done well. Which it certainly deserves to, because it’s a very good film. It’s not your standard modern horror film – it’s an old-fashioned ghost story, which we haven’t seen on the big screen for some time .. which is what I really like about it.
But what this box office success means to me is that Hammer will continue to invest in good ideas, and good scripts, and bring more good horror films to the screen. Which is good for the genre, and good for the UK film industry. And, ultimately, good for audiences. And that makes me happy.

Man on a ledge
It sounds interesting enough: A man named Nick Cassidy checks into a hotel early in the morning, orders breakfast, jots down his thoughts on a piece of paper, opens the window and climbs out onto the ledge, presumably to jump to his death.
But Nick doesn’t seem to be troubled in the least about his predicament, and it takes only a few moments before we realise something is up.
This “something” is the major plot hole that is the plot of Man on a Ledge. While Nick is on the precipice between life and death, already 21 stories closer to his maker, his brother – who, as far as we can tell, has never committed a crime before – is staging the robbery of the century inside a major jewellery firm, complete with bombs, fancy drills, liquid nitrogen and tricks straight out of the Mission: Impossible playbook. This firm is located just a stone’s throw from where Nick is hanging out.
