THE HACKNEY Festival of Fitness combines running and fitness challenges with community celebrations. The Festival – extended this year to cover three epic days of sport and fun on the Hackney Marshes – begins with a special fitness line up on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th May. More than 50,000 runners and spectators celebrated the spirit of Hackney at last year’s Festival, an increase of 30,000 people from 2017. Charity runners raised an average of £367 per person in 2018’s race.
The festival concludes with the Hackney Half Marathon on Sunday, 19th May – which has start and finish lines on Hackney Marshes. The route cruises down Mare Street through a carnival of sound, passes by the Town Hall, heads through Broadway Market and then takes in Hackney Wick, with its vibrant street art, before returning to the Marshes. In 2018 there were over 15,500 Hackney Half finishers,
Friday, 17th May, 3-8pm
A special fitness festival welcome evening on Hackney Marshes with stretch, mobility and pre-race warm up sessions, local food and drink, nutritional advice and Fit Films open air cinema.
Saturday, 18th May, 10am-8pm
A day of dedicated fitness classes for all ages and abilities.
Sunday – Hackney Half
The weekend’s headline event takes place, with the Fitness Festival Village hosting a full day of fitness programming devoted to the sport of running. The Village is open to the public throughout the day, from 7am, with a diverse line up of fitness activities for runners and spectators.
Market on the Marshes
The Market on the Marshes is a pop-up highlighting the best of local Hackney markets, breweries, galleries and start-ups alongside top sport and lifestyle brands. The market is open to the public all weekend.
Jessica Frey, General Manager of Virgin Sport, which owns and operates the event in partnership with Hackney Council, commented, “Following the incredible growth of our 2018 event, we’re excited to extend our programming and audience further to highlight the dynamic Hackney fitness and running culture and engage an even larger and broader range of athletes in 2019.”
