A team of local runners have completed the BUPA 10,000 to raise money for 26 water wells and hand pumps. A team of 26 runners took part in the Central London landmark event on behalf of Whitechapel based Human Relief Foundation.

“The revenue raised will fund 26 water wells and hand pumps and support some of the most needy people on the planet,” said Khoyrul Shaheed from the Human Relief Foundation. “I would like to thank the team for their brilliant support.” Abdal Ahmed added: “I hope our efforts will inspire others to take part in charitable deeds for those less fortunate.”

Jakia Ali ran with the team. She said: “It was a tremendous experience and I was chuffed to beat most of the men. I must say that was very satisfying. I’m glad that the money raise will be put to such good use.”

Mohsin Ahmed finished in one hour 15 minutes. He said: “I haven’t trained at all so I am best pleased that I have completed this run today. I’m going to give my medal to my eldest daughter Maryah as one of her birthday gifts. I hope she treasures it!”

One out of five deaths in children under five is as a result of them contracting a water related disease. 884 million people do not have access to clean drinking water. The number of people dying from diseases related to water is equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing every four hours.

There is enough water on the planet for everyone. What developing countries are lacking are the resources to implement equipment to make water sanitary and safe. In developing countries people are often left drinking unsafe water from rivers and puddles. They are also left without working toilets, which heightens the threat of water related diseases. In 2015, unsafe water is still one of the world’s biggest killers.

Human Relief Foundation is committed to providing communities with clean, safe water to drink. One hand pump takes about three days to construct, but its impact is enormous. Pumps last for many years and provide a clean source of water for hundreds of people in developing communities. They relieve parents from the burden of carrying their children for many miles to collect safe water, and prevent children from drinking local, untreated water when they are out in the street.

Hasan Mueenuddin from Human Relief Foundation understands that donors like to see evidence of their contribution. “This is why we will place a plaque on the side of the wells we raise money for with a chosen name on it and then send photographs. Where possible, we also attain images of local communities using the well, and will feedback to any comments or gratitude they may offer.”
